It might ultimately be proof of concept now, but the point of showing a low-count bounce raytracing that still looks decent especially after denoising gives us a nice roadmap on the future. Maybe given time, we will move to this as the new standard or at least a probable alternate to baked lighting.

Houdini 16.5 Launch Event

SideFX has shared a detailed presentation on the upcoming version of Houdini. The update will be released in a couple of days, so the team has decided to discuss new possibilities and show what’s coming.

Here are some of the features to be added with the update:

  • motion path editing
  • crowd banking
  • partial rag dolls
  • polyreduce
  • uvlayout
  • rounded edge rendering
  • narrow band flip simulations
  • optical flow
  • gamepad camera
  • terrain transplanting

The planned release date for Houdini 16.5 is November 7, 2017.
